Zindagi Kya Baat Hai, Zindagi Kya Baat Hai

Zindagi Khola Samandar Jis Mein Doobi Kashtiyaan
Zindagi Veeraan Banjar Jisse Uth Gayi Bastiyaan
O, Zindagi Khola Samandar Jis Mein Doobi Kashtiyaan
Zindagi Veeraan Banjar Jisse Uth Gayi Bastiyaan
Jisko Kehte Ho Janam Voh Maut Ki Shuruaat Ho

Zindagi Kya Baat Hai, Zindagi Kya Baat Hai

Itna Na Maayus Ban Tu, Kar Zara Zindaadili
Kyoon Nahin Dikhti Tu Hai Voh Khopr Par Khilti Kali
Jisko Kehte Ho Andhera Din Ki Voh Shuraat Hai

Zindagi Kya Baat Hai, Zindagi Kya Baat Hai

This song is a roller coaster and therin lies its mystery. When you start listening, you are attracted to its philosophical images - zindagi khulla samundar, zindagi viraan banjar. There's a certain sufi mystical quality to those images. But, what is the song trying to say?

At every step, it presents opposites and somewhere, the meaning is hidden in this duality - very Zen-like.

Zindagi khulla samundar jisme doobi kashtiyan - life's vastness, activity, power that consumes everything. And then, the very next line...Zindagi viraan banjar, jisse uth gayi bastiyan. The very same life, barren and featureless, becomes the birthplace of communities and cultures. The destoryer and the creator. And then the subtle follows in the next line - jisko kehte hain janam, woh maut ki shuruat hai.

It's a cycle. Two faces of the same coin. Night is the shadow of light, and life is the shadow of death. Implying that the 'creator' and the 'destroyer' are the same process.

This meaning isn't immediately obvious. The first impact of the line is that it sends a chill down your spine. It says that with every breath, you are dying. That's scary.

But then, the reassurance follows immediately. Itna na mayus ban tu. Kar zara zindadali. Don't lose heart, be enthusiastic. Kyun nahin dikhti tujhe woh kabr par khilti kali. :-) Awesome.

Again, the same theme....of the cyclical. The blending of the black and white into the grey. Death will be followed with life. Relax.

I think, in essence, the song has a single message.....turn the coin around. Don't get obsessed with what is obvious. Look at the other side. It's a beautiful rhythm. A dance that gives both hope and despair. And in the end, its your choice. Don't let reality scare you. Join the dance.

One of the most beautiful songs ever. :-)

Hmm...though i have seen the film, i dont really remember the plot where this song comes and without the video too, its too difficult to recall. So will comment just based on the lyrics (I haven’t even read the comments so that they don’t bias my comments :)).

It has been one of the interesting songs i have heard. Two paras, as if two people are talking to each other...one is a pessimist while the other one is an optimist. Each one of them is trying to present their perception of "zindagi".

It is very clear from the two paras which one represents which person and so no need to mention that. But the interesting thing is the way they perceive it. The extent to which the pessimist sees the negative aspect is beautifully shown in the last line where he defines life as the beginning of death. And in the same way the optimistic thinking is reflected in the last line defining darkness as beginning of day.

The optimist and the pessimist might be two different persons or just two mental states of a single person. Though I personally feel it is very much the former category, I being the latter of the two :), it might be very common to observe both the traits in a single person, depending on the phase through which he/she is going.

One might argue and believe that it is just a matter of time. If we wait for time to change and the phase to pass, the mental state too might change. But I would tend to disagree. It is more a matter of knowing yourself. If you are conscious of the state you are in, you definitely can change it. It is not about not experiencing or not feeling something but it is about when to stop feeling it and live life practically. But for the later to happen, it is important that you are conscious enough so as to feel it and stop feeling it.

Bahut hua…jo bhi ho, as the last line in the song says and I think both the optimist and the pessimist would agree with me that Zindagi…Kya Baat Hai!
